National Anthem I read the news today and it is chilling It seems that there is trouble in the land It said we will be safe if we are willing To turn away and judge our fellow man It said that in the darkness there is danger And everywhere you turn you must take care For every time you look you see a stranger And even in your home you must beware (Chorus) It seems like fear is our national anthem A tangled tune of blame and hate and lies With every verse, it's holding us for ransom And asking us to doubt our very eyes For someone's out to take away your freedom And someone's out to take away your voice And you won't know the perils when you see them And when they come, you won't have any choice (Chorus) (Bridge) But what if in our haste to save our freedom We give up our humanity instead? And what if in our penchant to look backwards We can not see the open road ahead? I read the news today and it is chilling It seems that there is trouble in the land It said we will be safe if we are willing To turn away and judge our fellow man But there is still and chance that we are able To heal the fear that's tearing us apart And bring our sense of justice to the table And lead both with our heads and with our hearts (Chorus) It's time to change our national anthem The twisted tune of greed and hate and lies I'm tired of how it's holding us for ransom And asking us to doubt our very eyes

Never Get What You Need You give your time and all you patience You give your life and all you know You give you heart and all the strength that's in you Hoping it will show But somehow when the tables turn And no one sees the light you burn And somehow they don't know (Chorus) You never get what you need What you need You never get what you need What you need You never get what you need What you need You never get what you need What you need You gave your faith and all your beauty You give your love down to your soul You give up all your time and wisdom And you know it takes it's toll But always when the tables turn They still can't see the light you burn And somehow they don't know (Chorus) (Bridge) When tables turn and fires burn No one knows the twists and turns Or the direction it might go You give them all your time and patience Tell them all you know You tell them all your heart felt feelings Hoping it will show But always when the table turns And when at last your fire burns It turns out they don't know (Chorus)

No Matter What You Do (Chorus) No matter what you do No matter what you do No matter what you do No matter what you do The words just keep on spinning But he says it's in your head And you just keep explaining wrong No matter what you said It seems like every dream you have Is a nightmare that comes true It isn't what you ordered But it all gets blamed on you (Chorus) You try to say it nicely And he says you're just too kind And then he says it for you Like he knows what's on your mind And when you come on hard and strong And when your words break through No matter how the plan went wrong It all gets blamed on you (Chorus) (Bridge) No matter what you think about the way you're supposed to be No matter that perfection is a thing you just can't see No matter when you wake up to the lies that you've been told And find yourself believing all the bullshit you've been sold No matter if you break away and tell yourself you're free It all descends to how it's supposed to be (Chorus) The words just keep on spinning But they say it's in your head But there are things that just don't fit No matter what he said But what if your confusion Is a game you just can't see To keep from you that you're Exactly who you are supposed to be (Chorus)

Chains 03:51
Chains (Chorus) It's a beautiful world we live in But a terrible truth remains That no matter the choice we're given We all end up in chains I see the children there All born without a care And then the fear takes hold It is the lies we're sold I see the parents grieve Not sure what they believe Their children treasures true Not sure what they should do? (Chorus) I see the walls laid down They spread for miles around Built to protect what's dear But they don't quell our fear And then the boarders rise And accusation flies And then the bombs rain down And spread for miles around (Chorus) (Bridge) And then the people cried About the life that died For they began to see They were no longer free I saw a man laid down He wore a thorny crown It was his life he gave That I not be a slave If he could see me now My spirit bound somehow What do you think he'd say 'Bout what we gave away? (Chorus)

Absolutely White (Chorus) It is black and it is white And I am absolutely right It is wrong or it is right And I am absolutely white I don't mind let's talk all night But I am absolutely right I won't give up without a fight Cause I am absolutely white It's a smokescreen In a daydream What is not seen Cries out again and again (Chorus) When the nightmare Feels like you care What is not fair Cries out again and again (Chorus) How can this be offensive? I'm being inclusive . . .

Find a Doctor When your soul is bleeding out in despair And you keep on acting like you don't care Find a Doctor Please find a Doctor When you mind is searching for some release 'Cause the only thing you want is some peace Find a Doctor Please find a Doctor (Chorus) A love prescription's what you need And anyone can fill it Find a doctor If you're sinking 'cause you can't find the light And you think it's time to give up the fight Find a Doctor Please find a Doctor When you think there's nothing more you can do And it seem like all your strength has left you Find a Doctor Please find a Doctor (Chorus) (Bridge) You can hurt me I will be fine 'Cause the love prescription heals every time When the light that we can see is so dim And we're drowning cause we think we can't swim Be a Doctor Please be a Doctor When the world is bleeding out in despair We can't keep on going like we don't care Be a Doctor Please be a Doctor A love prescription's what we need And anyone can fill it Be a doctor Please be a Doctor

Where Would We Be I met a fine man Was old as the mountains Who told me a story Bout crossing the sea He came to this country A poor stranded orphan Escaping the Nazi's He yearned to be free And finding himself On the cusp of a nation Where he had been hoping His dreams might come true He worked and he struggled Not taking for granted The gifts so familiar To me and to you (Chorus) Where would we be Where would we be Without those who dream of The land of the free? Where would we be Where would we be Without everything They gave you and gave me Now finding a job That no body else wanted He worked himself weary And slept on the floor But he was just grateful To show himself worthy Of building a life He had not known before He saved up his pennies And found an apartment And lived in the ghetto With five other men But still, every night He would count all his blessings The next day would come And he'd do it again (Chorus) (Bridge) But when he heard news Bout the raid on Pearl harbor He signed up the next day To go onto war He through it his duty To serve for the country That gave him this life He had not known before “What happened?” I asked “In the pitch of a battle That went on so long And took so many lives?” “You struggle,” he said “And don't take for granted You just do your job And hope something survives” But then he was still Then he reached in his pocket Pulled something out slowly To show it to me And there in his hand Was the purple heart medal He earned while defending The land of the free (Chorus)

Where Would We Be II Patriotism About that I have strong feelings How my father came To this country I'm thinking At age 14 with his parents Escaped Nazi Austria And then it was in WWII That he got a purple heart (Chorus) The human right to freedom What America stands for We screw up a lot Basic principals we stand for American on my father's side I was a first generation There was a lot of conflict Over what we do as a nation I joined the Air force Felt I was doing the right thing Patriotism being freedom And democracy spreading (Chorus) (Bridge) But it's like being a sports fan Is one team really better than the other? Patriotism used as an excuse Patriotism versus immigration Ostracized An area that needs serious attention Patriotism About that I have strong feelings How my father came To this country I'm thinking (Chorus) Where would we be?

I Like It 03:24
I Like It Like incense blowing in my hair You're the thing that takes me there A summer dream without a care And I like it (Chorus) And I like it And I like it The taste of wine is not for me The bitter twin of ecstasy It's not as close as I can be And I like it And I like it A lazy Sunday afternoon A deftly plotted banjo tune You're my ocean you're my moon And I like it And I like it (Chorus) (Bridge) I like it cause it makes me sing The brighter colors that you bring Like gold light on a faerie's wing More precious now than anything A warm fire on a winter's day A half smile that won't go away Your laughter makes me want to stay And I like it And when my summer days have past And winter's days are fading fast My love will go on till the last And I like it (Chorus)

All Rise Up 03:15
All Rise Up People listen to the sound There is dancing in the street I heard a message going round About hate and lie's defeat It says to come together now Everybody everywhere We are each others freedom That's the song we have to share Because (Chorus) When we all rise up We will all rise up When we all rise up We will all rise up Everybody's feeling down Thinking ' bout the world today War and hate and death and crime Is the price we have to pay But we can find the power now Everybody everywhere We are each others freedom That's the song we have to share Because (Chorus) (Bridge) May we stand Hand in hand One clan People listen to the sound And start dancing in the street There's a message going round About hate and lie's defeat We can come together now Everybody everywhere We are each others freedom That's the song we have to share Because (Chorus)

I'm Alone 02:45
I'm Alone One cup sugar, two cups flower Let it bake about an hour Powder, soda, sift together With the salt I don't know whether I can make it through Without your voice There on the phone I'm all alone Water hot and melted butter Your pans dead cold makes me shutter Half cup orange juice for flavor Can't recall if I did savor You and every day I had your voice There on the phone Now I'm alone (Bridge) “If you want to say goodbye Up to her bedside you must fly” I held her hand while she did writhe And to the pain she closed her eyes I told her that I loved her dear And passing on she should not fear The only mother I and known I left her there to die alone I will regret it every day The choice I made to walk away I have to say what was I thinking? Leaving you while time was shrinking You just lying there Without your voice Not coming home All alone She worked until her back was breaking All the care the she was taking With walnuts chopped one cup cranberries Is it through that bread that carries You and all your love This is your voice It brings me home When I'm alone

Until We Love We walk around like we're sleeping With all the secrets we're keeping It's what we sew that we're reaping It's like we don't even know And in this life we are faking It is a chance that we're taking Because these walls that we're making Won't set us free (Chorus) Until we love Until we love We walk around like we're dying From all the lies that we're trying To keep our souls from complying It's like we don't even know That when we're looking for pleasure It's pain and time that we measure If it's not life that we treasure We won't break free (Chorus) (Bridge) Until we love we won't find peace We won't find joy in all this hate Until we love we close our eyes Till it's too late It's like we don't even know It's like the whole world is dreaming Cause we can't handle the screaming And deep inside we're all scheming It's like we don't even know But there's a world there that's waiting Beyond the lies and the hating Because this life we're creating Won't set us free (Chorus) (Bridge) (Chorus)

about

It is the Spring of 2024, and it seems that no one is happy. Also, sadly, it looks like there is little on the horizon that will make everyone happy, and not much in the way of leadership that will do anything about it. As a songwriter, I try to share the inspiration I get from the people I know who consistently remind me that what is possible comes, not from leaders, or experts, or gurus, but from each other. This collection of songs is inspired by these people and he reality I experience. My straight cis male white lens is limited, but I see a future where what holds us together wins over what is tearing us apart. Maybe that's whiteness talking, but every day I witness people refusing to give in to hate and fear. I believe that if they can do it, so can I. Here's hoping you can, too.

Most of my songs come to me in dreams. This is my attempt to translate them from dreams into something I can share.

Different songs come at different times and I have no idea why the dream world sends them to me, but it seems like it's my responsibility to pass them on. What they mean to you is what matters. I'd love to hear what you think about them.

Where Would We Be and Where Would We Be II are not dream songs. They were both inspired by a conversation I had with Paul Goldman. Thanks Paul!

Absolutely White is a song inspired by something a friend of mine said about ideas that polarize us. Thanks David.

I'm Alone is not a dream song, either. It is a song I wrote in response to a songwriting prompt from Guy Capecelatro III. I had wanted to write a song about my mom's cranberry bread for along time. His prompt was the inspiration I needed. Thanks Guy!

Thanks to my family who loves and supports everything I do. I would not be who I am without them, and I cherish them every single day. They are the ones who have to suffer through me getting up in the middle of the night to go down to the studio to transcribe my dreams into songs. I appreciate their patience and understanding.

I want to express my deep gratitude for the black genius that inspires so much of my music. I don't know why I dream in black gospel, soul and rhythm and blues, but I often do. Though it comes to me in dreams, this style of music is not mine. Without it, though, I would have no music, so I hope my work in some small way amplifies the music of those who have sacrificed so much and brought so much to my life. JGW 2024.
